🔈 Grinding noise? That's usually worn rollers
If your Stannah makes a grinding noise on a straight run or around a bend, that normally means the rollers are worn. You might also notice it running slower than it used to. Worth sorting quickly, because a small roller problem turns into a rail problem if it's left.

Not every Stannah model tells you what's wrong. Here's what each one does, and the faults we see most often.
Stannah 600: has a diagnostic display
The 600 is one of the only Stannah models with a proper diagnostic display, so you can read a fault code and tell us exactly what it says.
Code 9 is the one we hear about most. It's often not serious, and it can clear itself with a simple reset.
Try this first: switch the main power off, wait 10 seconds, then switch it back on.
If the code clears, the lift will work again, and that's the end of it. If it comes straight back, or stays on code 9 the whole time, the lift won't work at all. That's when it needs an engineer, and the usual cause is the powered swivel seat encoder.
Stannah 260: no display, dead lift
The 260 has no diagnostic codes at all. So when it stops, there are no clues on the machine. Here's what usually happens with the over-travel fault:
- The lift doesn't slow down as it approaches the bottom of the stairs
- It hits the limit
- The over-limit trips the main PCB
- The armrest lights go off
- The stairlift is completely dead, no lights at all
Nine times out of ten, it's the slow-down switch on the back of the carriage. It should trigger on a small white plastic ramp on the track, and if it doesn't, the lift never slows in time.
Stannah 260: worn roll pins
There's another 260 issue worth knowing about. The rail on a 260 is joined with roll pins, also called tension pins. The proper name is steel slotted spring tension pins, DIN 1481.
Over time, the small vibrations of the stairlift running up and down work these pins loose. Once a pin starts to come out, it can catch the rollers and mechanical parts as the carriage passes over it.
How to spot it: the pins sit on the top and bottom track of the 260, since it uses a double rail. When they start to come out, they show up as small black dots at the rail joints. If you clean the track yourself, you'll feel them as you run a cloth along. Most owners walk past them every day without knowing what they're looking at.
It's not something you'd notice until it causes damage. If you've got an older 260, it's worth checking the joints, or having them looked at your next service.
Stannah 420: no display either
The 420 doesn't have a diagnostic display either. So there's no code to read and no screen to check.
That makes it harder for owners to narrow down a fault before calling us. You can only go by what the lift is doing, or not doing. If you describe the symptoms on the phone, we can usually work out what's wrong before we arrive.
The reset procedure for the Stannah 600 is safe for owners to try. But if the fault comes straight back, or the lift still doesn't feel right after a reset, please don't keep trying. Ring us on 0800 567 7033 and we'll take it from there.

What does code 9 mean on a Stannah 600?
