Stair lift Repairs: Troubleshooting for stannah stairlift 400/420
For stannah stairlift repairs. In the unlikely event that the stairlift stops on the stairs, your stairlift has a bulit in safety feature, which allows you to manually move the stairlift.
It should only be used to move the stairlift short distance. To use the manual handwinding function:
- Ensure the battery isolator switch (on the back of the stairlift) is in the off position.
- Insert the hand winding handle through the whole at the side of the carriage, as showing in the picture.
- Press the safety pad and turn the handle in the appropriate direction as indicated on the label, on the carriage.
If you are unable to hand wind the stairlift yourself, its wise to contact your stair lift dealer, or contact Stairlift repairs
In the unlikely event that you experience a problem with your stairlift, you can use the following checklist.
If, once you have checked the list you are still experiencing problem, please call us for more advice on 08005677033.

My stairlift will only move up at six inch intervals but when it eventually gets to the top it will come down in one movement
Sounds like new Stairlift batteries required, You need an engineer out, for service and new batteries.

Want to move a stannah 420 from right side to left side. Easy to do?
It can be hard or impossible if the swivel lever isn’t made to be reversible.
Yes it can be done if your are mechanically minded First remove seat and fix to a bench and remove seat tell me what you see!
Jay are you a stairlift tech please? I have the same issue moving a LH to RH, it’s a Stannah 600. My husband has been able to convert the seat so it swings the right way on to the landing but the stairlift will go up but not down without overriding using the emergency mode. I’ve been told it could be due to the safety gear now being on the wrong side of the chair? Can this be moved to the other side please? Thanks.
My stairlift light comes on under the seat making beeping noises but the green light under the armrest isnt coming on and the chair itself isnt moving?
Did you get a solution to this please? We have a Stannah 600, LH but my husband has tried to install it as a RH. He’s altered the seat to swivel the opposite way at the top of the stairs, he’s fitted everything the opposite way round. It now happily goes up but will not come down unless in emergency mode. Is it a safety gear issue now that’s at the top of the seat and not below? Can this be moved or have we messed up buying the wrong sided chair? i need stairlift repairs .
Hi,
Is there anywhere online to show how to change stannah 600 swivel seat from right to left?
I have a 420. When the chair is in the bottom charging pos. it beeps. If I wiggle the chair the beep stops. I believe this beep indicates a no charge. the chair charges in the top station.
Originally I changed the chair from LH to RH several years ago and it has been working fine . I am looking at the elec. schematic and see a note about jumpers for different sides. Could this be a problem?
Hello, writing on behalf of my 100 year old grandmother. She has been having trouble with her stairlift the past few years. The model is 420, from 2011. Batteries have been replaced a few years ago along with copper strips being replaced as well as a few other things done recommendated as per Stannah service technicians. She is able to use the stairlift, however sometimes its very slow, and she needs to hold the toggle switch going up or down, then release to stop the chairlift and start again and repeat steps to get up or down the full way. The stairlift is running ok mostly, but now no matter where the stairlift is on the rail, once she’s done using it, she needs to strain herself reaching to switch the machine off at the back or it won’t stop beeping. We have had service packages in the past and have had multiple technicians come to the house, especially with recent issues, however unfortunately no fix yet. Please help with any helpful tips or recommendations for fixes, it is greatly appreciated as my Nan needs this working for her quality of life.
Seems like the batteries gone dry again ,I’m assuming it the charging system fault ! You need someone to look at it . If you live around our coverage area we can sort it out for you.
How much it costs for stannah foot panel
My father forced the footrest into the upright position instead of pressing the button on armrest chair still operates along the rail but footrest will not deploy the motor runs as if to do so but not operational
Where in the United States can I purchase a manual winding crank to move chair back into charging position without costing a right kidney for Stannah Stairlift Curved Model 260? (Lake Worth FL) tu!
I’m having the same problem
Model 250 descends slowly and judders sometimes then goes normal on straight and bend . Please help
My toggle switch fell off.Is it connected to other wiring in arm.It is so expensive to all a service.
Same here. These are crap stair lifts. The designer needs retiring. Making rubbish like this no wonder we are the laughing stock of the world.
My 91 year old mum has to press the button on and off. Moves about 1 wrung. It has new batteries and cables. Due to Covid no one will come to repair it. They don’t know what is wrong with it. One guy told me they a unreliable. Never again buy a Stannah!
Leave me alone with the designer for 15 minutes! I would teach him a thing or two about how to design better.
They should come here to Cornwall and sort their crap out by giving us a new one.
Probably the 45degree faced wheel that runs beneath the lower rail. I’ve got the same issue and I’m on the net trying to find out how to adjust it upwards so that it’s making constant contact with the rail instead of intermittent contact.
Mine beeps twice and flashes H4. But it won’t move
Hi
Did you get this resolved
If u did how?
same here my dads stair lift as spent more time at the bottom of is stairs than it as spent going up them .we keep getting no 3 code saying safety pads checked all round .it and nothing obstructing it .rang stanna and say there is a £120 call out fee to come and look at it .my dads A pensioner .and carn’t afford this .i only hope one day that there group will need one of there stair lifts .would not recommend stanna
You might need an engineer out to clean connecters .
My inlaws have a Stannah. The chair returns to a rest position when not in use – a few feet up the rail. There is a magnet/contact that has to white cables. The brown (live) wires are joined ro the contact. The two blue (nutral) wires are cut short, not connected but with no tape/insulation.
Is this normal or has something cut the wires? Uncertain whether this needs an engineer to visit or not?
The right hand arm on my stairlift chair is very loose. How can I remove the cover to tighten
On the side of the lower part of the arm you will see four plastic clip type screws (two on each side). With a small screwdriver just undo them and then remove the four remaining plastic cups. You then can separate the 2 parts.
At the back of the arm rest you will see a 13mm nut and bolt and you will just need two spanners to tighten.Check its not to tight before you re assemble
My dad’s minivator isnt climbing the stairs making a noise like the cog is slipping on the track but the track looks good I’ve cleaned the rollers ,is it likely be the cogs where the motor turns 90 degrees ( gearbox) ? Cheers
Mine is the same although it will go up using remote if no one in chair, but comes down no problem
You need to check your main 12v 7ah Battries and get them replaced
My stairlift won’t move. It beeps twice each time I try.
Lift beeps when I press it and will not move
i have the same problem
Hi just been out to a customer and his stair lift returns home after a couple of seconds after lifting your finger off the up button
Sound like there’s a problem with the arm control switch, and also check if it has landing controls fixed to walls at top and bottom. The down push may be stuck in. If it has remotes then it’s going to be in the arm controls
HI
we have a stannah 400 stairlift. this morning when my wife was taking her mother down it stopped.
I have checked the main power fuse = ok the fuse in the transformer box = ok
the green light on the arm is not on, but the orange one is, the key is in the on position.
BUT it will still not work, is there another fuse inline somewhere for main power supply??
Please Call us on 08005677033 for more information .
I have a 30 year old stannah that seems to have the same problem as shown under the name of David Lovell. I too have checked all the fuses and power sources but get no green light in the handle. Have replaced the batteries about a month ago and they appear fine.
Where are the batteries in my over12year stannnah stairlift
If its a stannah 300 model the batteries are fitted under the seat.
Hi my mum has a stannah 420 stair lift , it seems to be working as it should but keeps giving off 1 short beep every minute or so
Did you get a resolve?I have a friends Mum who has just got the same symptoms as yours
Dear Sir,
I name is Rudi Resida and I live in the Netherlands.
I own a Stannah stairlift model 260 Starla.
Normally I can park the lift half way up the stairs where
there is a charging point.
Suddenly the lift won’t park there anymore but continious to
go to the first floor.
Do you know the cause of this?
Best Regards
Rudi Resida
You will need to check if the charging point got voltage normally 27v.
Or see if the lift charging plunger rod is making contact with the charging block.
hope that will help.
Stairlift repair
3 copper keys in the track fell out while removing the unit from the track for installation. Trying to get them back in is difficult. Do you have any tips concerning these three little copper keys that look like a T…?
My stair lift continually beeps. How do I solve this.I have tried switching it off but it still happens.
Your stairlift is not getting charged ( find where is your stairlift charger located and see if its turned on)
Charger is not connected Charger unplugged/switched off.
Charger is not charging the main batteries, Charger unplugged/switched off.
Could be the 12volt batteries need replacing. I switched the power off at night to stop it bleeping, and had to have two new batteries fitted.
I have a Stannah 420, when going up or down it feels like I’m going over a bump (just a little one), what could this be?
You need to call an engineer out to inspect the RAIL/TRACK
Possibly got a worm or damaged roller, when they get suck and don’t turn it causes flat spots on the roller causing it to bump, bit like a flat car tyre. Or it could be a build up of gunk and just needs to be taken off and cleaned. Will need an engineer visit for sure
I have a stannah 600. I have wound it onto the track and led9 is showing 2, ready for operation yes? But i cannot get the carriage to move under its own power (with th sw1 and 2 buttons) what am i doing wrong? No chair fitted yet.
My Stannah 420 won’t go up all the way. It keeps stopping every few inches. It will go down in one motion. The third indicator light goes red after it stops on the way up (low voltage detected). Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
New Batteries required
You need to call an engineer out to inspect the track/Rial
Hi I have a Stannah 260 which worked great for 3 years and since mother passed away it’s not been in use switched off at charger and under seat and at key point. Been off for 10 years but now I need to use it as had kidney operation iv switched it on at charger have red light on that, switched on under seat and left it for a few days, fewdays later switching all three switches on but nothing works no green or amber light on arm rest. If the batteries are knackered surely it will still work with direct mains right ? Or does the mains only charge the battery if flat and nothing more
I have a Stannah Mod 400. Lately It started moving slowly. When I tapped on the top part of the motor which I think is the breaking mechanism it work OK for a couple of days but now it started again to move slowly and stops. When the switch is engaged (for it to move up or down) you can hear the click of it engaging but will not move unless you help it. It seems that the break will not release. Can one only change this part as the motor seems to be still OK. Thanks and regards Herman
you need new motor/ from the sound of it your motor brushes are gone faulty.
I have a stannah 420 chair lift and after a long term not in use the battery died I have replaced them and now the chair is only swivel but does not move up the rail what could be the fault
When you say swivel does it mean it swivels automatically (power swivel seat) if so and it does swivel at the bottom that could the upper limit switch is activated! Find any obstruction might be keeping the limit switch active.
Hi Sam, Have the same issue, the swivel action works at bottom when trying to move chair upwards. Can you advise where the switch you mentioned in your previous reply is located as I believe it will be a simple fix :). Many thanks Jamie
Hi Sam I have same issue, seat estates when at the bottom of the stairs. Can you advise where I can locate the upper limit switch please? On the chair I see 3 push switches that all seem fine. If I manually wind the chair up it will move down no issue but trying up just swivels seat. I’m sure it’s just the upper limit switch. Much appreciated
The right arm which has the on off switch won’t stay up letting me transfer safely keeps falling down has black marks under it. Engineer needs £300 to come out to look at it can’t afford this at present. I need to transfer from wheelchair to stairlift and same upstairs rely on it totally. Usually serviced every year but cv19 has put paid to that is approx 5 years old. Stannah wanted over £500 year for a contract but only Labour no parts.
Hello I have the same issue but I have not tried to tap the motor but will try tomorrow. Did you manage to fix yours ? Any help would be appriciated
I cannot get the cover off to change the batteries the seat is to low how do I move he seat up on my stanna 420
I have a Stannah 430 both remote handsets will not work battery’s OK.
Hi guys I have a stannah 420 it goes down perfectly manually or remote controller it will not however go up I cannot hear a relay click for it to go up but surely can hear one thing download does this sound like a complete circuit board
My elderly friend has a Stannah Derby 320 external lift. It has been dormant for 10 years since her husband died, She is now in need of the chair. I checked that all the switches were turned on. The green and yellow light both light up. When I use the toggle switch or the up and down call switches, it just makes two quiet loud clicking noises and does not move. Any ideas? Thank you.
Hi Bop
we have the same problem, did you manage to fix the problem .
Stairlift only moves a few inches with person sat on it then goes so far and won’t move but no beeps when it stops
The stairlift is not emitting the beep when it is on the charging point and charging.
I can see it arcing so know current is present when it makes contact with the charging strip.
Hi, i have a stannha 420. It moves about 2ft then stops, then another 2ft and so on until it gets to the top. Batteries have been changed and it has a full charging rail.
Maybe coincidence but the problem started a few days after a service, could the service of dislodged the brushes?
Are there any manuals which show where these are so i can check them?
Hello my friend has a Stannah 420. The remote control will not work. The chair works normally when using the onboard control but not when using the remote. Any ideas?
1 check the remote batteries, if the remote control flashing green lights and the stair lift doesn’t respond you have a problem with signal receiver.
Call your local stannah dealer for help.
Armrest falls down.will not stay in upright position. How to fix?
Hi Rich
we have the same problem, did you manage to fix the problem .
Hi i have a stannah 420 battery operated stairlift.i am installing, the previous owner did not take more of the wiring for the charger to the rail. There is 3 connections to the copper stripe, 2 wired from the charger blue and brown and an earth fixed to the side of the rail. Any ideas thsnks
Is it a HINGED track? if its a hinged track the brown and the blow wires connect to the copper straps you should have 3 copper straps.
Its complicated to explain, and you need to be more careful with the wiring as you probably can damage the the main or the hing board.
Call a local stannah dealer to help you.
If it a power hinge there should be 3 copper buss bar strips .There is a set way the strips go in as they are different lengths.
Wiring
Blue to top
Red to Middle
Brown to bottom
All that will happen if you get them blue and brown the wrong way round is if you call the chair down it will go up and visa versa
Advice please. Stannah 420 (five years old) and fuse keeps blowing. The engineer has replaced the circuit board fuse twice – once with 1amp (lasted two months):and secondly with 5A ceramic fuse – which has failed again within a few days. What causes fuse to blow and what is suggested solution to the problem?
HI ALL PLEASE HELP MY STANNAH 420 IS GOING DOWN BUT NOT UP THANKS
Hi
I have a Stannah 600 which travels easily without any load but if I sit on it moves in short movements,2 or 3 inches and has to be restarted each time.
You need to check main Batteries.
Hello I have a 2007 stanner stair lift with the track that lifts up at the bottom and would really appreciate someones help. As the chair gets near the joint it stops and the green light goes off but if I lean back on the chair, it powers back up again.
2007 Stannah ? is it 420 or 400 Model ?
How do you tighten arm rest to stop it falling down all the while
You need to take the arm rest cover off to get to the bolts.
I have a Stannah 300 it was working perfectly but now the chair appears to be getting no power the batteries are being charged and the hinged part at the bottom is raising and lowering correctly. All switches and key are in the on position
Could be over limit or OSG is on .
Hi I have a stannah 260 it goes up but relay doesn’t click when toggle is pushed to go down and it just sits there even using the remote . Any ideas what this could be ?
Check all your down Safety pads.
I have the same problem on the 420 did you find the problem
The safety belt has got twisted and will not return or let me pull it out it is hanging about 10” out
Call a Local engineer to replaced it
I have a Stannah 410. Replaced batteries and everything works fine except-when it get to a foot or so from the top of the track it shuts off and will not move. Power lights go out and it does nothing. The only way to get it going again is to use the manual handle and move it back down the track about 1/2″ and all is fine. When I move it back the power lights come back on and it moves as it should. I have greased and checked the track for damage and see nothing wrong with the track. I also adjusted the stop pieces on the sides of the track. Nothing seems to help, any ideas??
There is no problem at the bottom of the track, works as it should.
Sounds like OSG problem, over speed governor
I installed a used stannah made in 2013,model unknown, maybe a 420,it worked fine for the previous owner. It was working fine after I was finished. Now there is a problem, the chair will start up a few inches then stops.the only way to resume up is to turn the power off then on again & the chair will resume moving, going down seems to be fine.what should I be looking for?
its a batteries issue make sure your charging system is working, you may need new batteries
We had new batteries very recently. Still doesn’t work. Rubbish design I say. I think I will do a documentary film on stairlifts.
It could be something else causing the batteries to go flat.charging system!
I have a Stannah260 it’s making what sounds like gear on rack noise would it be drive gear worn?
sounds like gearbox problem
Hi there,
For a straight( ie no hinged section ) Stannah 420 stairlift, where does the 24Vdc psu connect to. This lift was removed from an Aunt’s house three years ago by others who lost the psu. I have a suitable psu but as the lift is hours away I cannot see where it is to connect to and if I need a specific connector (my guess is a two way Phoenix connector).
I have new batteries for it so at least I’ll have that covered.
Any advice regarding the connection would be appreciated.
John
i got a saxon stana it keep bleeping its got acopper strip and at the top it got two wier wich go into a white plastic with 3 slot one must be for the copper track to go in and owe dos the charging wire gointo it
If you wires black and red. the red is positive and it should be connected with copper strip. the back negative wire should be connected on any point on the track.
I have a stannah 420. The chair has tons of wobble. Is thete an adjustment i can do to tighten the gap . I think the guide wheels are too far apart. I can push the chair back and forth a good 2 inches, more if i get agressive, but the rail seems to be stsble
Very easy. My lift goes up the left side of the stairs and only the two rollers on the foot rest side of the carriage are adjustable. There is an adjustment screw and a locking screw for each of the two rollers. The locking screw is accessed through a hole in the pivoting plastic safety switch cover. This is the cover that is on both ends of the carriage and sort of wraps around the rail. You will see an access hole that sort of aligns with the two rollers. Ensure both the top and bottom locking screws are loose. Then you can tighten the rollers. The access hole to tighten the top roller is visible just to the right of the foot rest (in my case) and in line with the roller. The access hole for the lower roller however is located 3″-4″ down the track and behind the cover so the cover has to be removed first. I can’t remember exactly how, but it was straight forward. This stairlift has a lot of snap on plastic covers so if any and all screws are removed, and any cover doesn’t then fall off, just pull. Once the cover is removed the access hole is obvious. Tighten both rollers and then tighten the locking screws. Not sure how tight you can go, but I left just the slightest amount of rock in the chair, just enough to know that I wasn’t squeezing the rollers onto the rail.
Stannah 300. Moves a few inches up then lights #3 LED up red and stops. Won’t move again w/o cycling off/on. Chair returns to bottom fine.
Have you checked the main batteries.?
I have a simplicity 950 I purchased this as working but when installed will not operate the codes 8 and 9 come on but it showed error when the switch is operated it is charging ok and power appears normal can u help thanks
Hi Mark, I am having the same problem with My Stannah 300. Were you able to fix it? and if so How?
I have the same problem. were you able to fix this issue? If So, How?
Hi found all comments use full we have a 28 yr old stanna stair lift the arm will drop and red light is on the arm saying power on but the chair will not move not a sound at all from it what could be the problem
Did you try using the Wall Control Switch (Call Station) ? if the answer is yes! make sure the seat is locked in position, or the swivel seat switch is not on close circuit position, or faulty wire. hope this can help.
My 420 needs new batteries but carnt get to them, the seat is tight on to them any suggestions thankyou
While the (near-new) 600 CE seat was at the top, I inadvertently turned off the power (2 switches), causing the unit to beep intermittently. When I restored the power, the chair movement was not restored and the machine emitted a deep, loud tone for a short time, I followed the emergency-restart instructions on the right side of the chair but did not know how to access the battery isolator switch, which I understand to be at the back of the unit, against the wall. The orange number is stuck on 9, and the green light is on.
I have a stannah 400 lift it goes up very slowly, and some times it stops for a few seconds and then start working, battery (new)was changed a few months ago, green light stay on but no beeping noise, please tell me where the fault lies.
You need new batteries
can you please tell me if we have to turn the stair lift off after each use or DO WE LEAVE IT ON IN ORDER TO KEEP ON CHARGING,
Have a Stannah 320 and it will want to drive up but not down? All the limit switches are fine (tested with a multimeter)
We have a 260 model that will only go up a few inches and then stops although it does come down perfectly
Service and batteries required
Hi we have a stana stairlift that curves it’s over 28 years old no batteries on we wish to take it out but don’t know how to remove it any ideas please .it has big metal drop down rail with big teeth under neath .
you will need to split the rail sections to make it lighter and easy to remove.
Stannah 260
To get the charging light to come on, I keep having to flick the brass charging rod.
I would like to know if this charging rod operates a switch.
Hi, i`ve got a 300 model. Put new batteries in and it went to the top of the stair no bother. Now it is stuck there. No light on armrest. The white guides on the rail have come loose and I don`t know where they sit on the rail (how far down from the top) to secure them. Is this the reason for no light on armrest.
You probably triggered the osg , ( over speed governor) that can be caused by the plastic rail cover not been on proper as you mentioned!
Or the lift has over traveled and triggered the over limit switch ! You need to remove the or higher up the stopping cam .
i have an older 1995 stannah 81512?. It stops at the top ok but when i press to go down again the lights go out as its blown the small fuse on the pcb. if i replace fuse & manually wind chair down an inch i can press down button and goes down normal until i go to top again then same happens. Is this a problem with the limit switch. The limit brackets on the rail are in their correct position. Moving the limit lever by hand indicates 2 clicks in each direction but at differing positions. This model does not appear to have batteries either..it has a ribbon type cable that is wound up inside the track as chair moves. Are service manuals still available?
Seems like you have a problem with the top limit switch! That could be a short Circuit with the limit switch wiring.
Yes that is my assumption. The switch controls both top & bottom limits by the lever swiveling left or right so maybe i need to remove it & bench test it for a short. If i can find another spare switch probably worth just swapping it out. Thanks anyway.
I just brought a second hand stannah 420 stairlift but like an idiot I took his word that it’s in working order but when I picked it up it didn’t work apparently it hasn’t been used for around a year but charged it up last week and worked ok but not now. The green lights on on the arm rest but it doesn’t move or bleep at all. Any advice out there please
Ok ! First you need to make sure lift is charging, and that’s can be done by turning the charger of then the lift should bleed.
Hi how do you removed the foot rest cover to gain access to the safety switches on the foot rest on a stsnnah 600 ?
Hi how do you remove the foot rest cover to gain access to the safety switches on stannah 600 ?
I have a stannah stairlift and the rollers are squeaking badly when I go up and down. Can anyone suggest a solution, apart from having to have new rollers fitted?
Hi, I have a Stannah 420 with a powered hinged rail. The hinged rail is the problem. The rail automatically extends perfectly but does not return to the upright position when the chair is moved up the rail to the charging point. This began after I (the stairlift is not for me) fell down the steps and inadvertently grabbed the rail to break my fall. (It didn’t help!)
The rail can easily manually be returned to the upright position. It’s not a big problem but it is a tripping hazard for other people in the house.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hi, I have a Stannah 420 lift with a powered hinged rail. My issue is with the rail, it extends successfully but does not move fully to the upright position as the lift moves up the stationary rail. The hinged rail raises about 3 inches and stops. The rail remains down over the walkway near the entry door, a little bit of a trip hazard for everyone else in the house. Now, in full disclosure: the problem began after I began to fall down the steps (the lift is not for me) and inadvertently grabbed the rail to break my fall (it did not.)
Any help would be appreciated.
We have a Model 300. The green armrest light is off. The yellow light over the circuit board is on. I have cycled the armrest rocker switch and key switch to no avail. Unit was working flawlessly since battery change several years ago. No indication of low voltage prior to light out.
The .500 ma fuse on the circuit board was blown. Replaced. Problem solved.
Replaced batteries 2 months ago. About one “trip” in 10 the lift stops before reaching the top. Up/down switch works and trip will continue after turning off then on, the armrest on/off switch An authorized distributor tech traced the problem to the motor speed switch on the circuit board. He said no replacement boards are available for the 300. Does anyone cost effectively repair and/or exchange these boards? The unit still looks and works like new and I am exploring alternatives to scrapping it.

Model250 upon descending goes slowly and falters then half way picks up speed then slow to bottom . Please help .
Hi Sam-u1. You certainly have helped a lot of people with fast response times, which is very kind of you!
We just recently moved and accidentally pulled the charging wire a part as we were setting the model 420 chair back up. For a couple of days it beeped on and off as we tried to repair the wires and then it stopped working altogether. I took the charger to have checked and was informed it was putting out the correct amps so I moved on to the batteries as they needed to be changed soon anyway. We took a picture of the wires to make sure we did not make any simple mistakes and put it back together expecting success but receiving cricket’s instead!
The green light does not come on and we have looked at hours of troubleshooting and tried everything we can think of. The main switch on the back , the switch on the right arm and the key turned to the on position have all been tried 100 times. There is a red light on the charger, which is the only one it has and my enthusiastic helper has been shocked a few times, so we know power is flowing and of course the batteries are new. I have checked the inline fuse and it looked like new. I have heard there is a fuse on the PCB but I am not sure what it looks like and I have run out of obvious reasons that might cause the green power light to remain off.
It will be sometime until the only engineer in our province can see it and my mother who is 87 needs to climb the stairs in order to use the bathroom, or remain stranded all day.
Any suggestions of what I might try would be extremely appreciated .
Thanks
Murray
My Model 400 only ascends a few inches before stopping. On turning off then on again it just repeats the process.Any suggestions please?
New batteries required! 2 batteries 12v 7ah .
Thanks. Are the batteries on the model 400 easy to replace?
Hi Sam, My Stannah 300 will only go up several inches and then shuts down. I have to turn on/off to reset. Then repeat. It does go down fine. Could this be the battery or the charger ? How do I figure which one?
Main batteries need replacement.
Hi
my 420 will not lock into the travel position.
The swivel levers will not come all the way back up.
Because of this the chair will not move.
I purchased 2 stannah 420 shair lifts,> How do you get the chair on the rail with out damaging the charging pins? I have no installation or users manual? thanks charlie
There is a small hole in the charging brush and if you push the brush in that hole will line up with the hole in the brush holder ! You need a small tiny wire to feed it through to hold the brush in while you putting the lift on the rail. Don’t forget to leave some over hang on the wire so you can pull it out after.
Hi Sam I’ve just put a Stannah 600 in for my brother it was in an identical house and had been disconnected for about 18 months as there isn’t any lights showing ( it’s been charging for a few days now) is it likely the batteries needing replacement?
I have a used 420 built in 07/2010 and it lacks the installation manuals and operation manuals. Also I do not think they provided me with all of the electrical. Can you please tell me how I can acquire them.

My mother’s stairlift stannach 420 2013 stopped working near the top of its track. When you try to move it it makes the initial loud click that proceeds it’s normal operation but instead of moving it makes another loud click. I took the cover off the upper part and there was a green light illuminated on the 7th Light. There was a blinking green light initially on number 5 but when it made the loud clicking noise a red light came on in number one position. I don’t know if these are fault code lights or not. Any idea what is wrong.
The osg switch needs replacing on my 420 stannha stairlift is it difficult to replace
It can be very difficult.
How to reset osg when activated when removing lift fault code 9
I have a Stannah 420,after replacing the hand control batteries the lift still works manually but wont respond to the remotes. Can you please help me.
You need to double check if the receiver is responding to the remote control. And flashing light as you press on the remote
there is a light on but doesn’t seem to flash. is there a way to synchronize them?
there is a light on but doesn’t seem to flash when I push the button.

how do you clean or lubricate the runners on a stannah 600 straight
Hi, My mother has a Stannah 420. Last week it stopped at the top as usual but when asked to come back down it clicked and did a one second start and probably moved 1mm. Any ideas please?
All lights are on, checked for obstruction, lifted seat up and down and checked swivel is in correct position.
Hi, My Stannah 420 Stair lift travelled to top of stairs as normal last night but this morning it starts to engage/move for 1 second and immediately stops?
Checked for obstructions, seat down etc and all looks ok.
Any ideas please?
Is that in both directions or is it only going up ?
If it’s only going up , try using remote control without you been on it . If it works .. then you might need service and new batteries.
Thank you for coming back to me. It stopped working at top of stairs, i twiddled about with everything and it started to work for one week but has now stopped at the top of the stairs once again. So will not go up or down.
We do not have a remote but i did try it without anyone sitting on chair and it still didnt move.

Hi I have a Stannah 420, it often judders for the first foot or so going downhill but then after a stop and restart it goes smoothly, it is always smooth going up. It has new batteries and is charging. Could it be the relay contacts? Motor brushes? One of the many switches?
It could be the motor brushes!
My Stannah 600 displaying Fault 9. It was identified using fault code 9A6. That is OSG
switch activated. How to deactivate this and where is this switch
If it’s osg you will need to hand wind the Stairlift toward the up .
Hello I have a stannah 400 and it starts off as normal then shortly after slows down a lot. This happens going up or down or anywhere on track. Would appreciate some help
check the batteries!
The 400 and 420 got a common fault with motor brushes and break .
Ok thank you I have had the batteries checked and all fine. Will check brushes next.
Many thanks
Hello do you have a link to a guide on how to check the motor brushes and does the motor need to be removed. Many thanks
We have the stannah 420. Today the cable that connects the footplate to the arm snapped.
Replacement cables are on the internet for around £36 but I can’t find a video that shows how to replace it. Can anyone help?
It’s ok
I worked out how to change it.
Error code interpretation needed: Stannah 420 problem, after working fine recently, it wont operate today. the chair is at the top, and when pressing power switch in the down direction, is giving a quiet click, but not then coming into action. Under the covers, the illumniated green LED number 6 is illuminated and the number 4 LED is flashing. Any info on what the code indicates please, anyone !?
I found the problem. Little plastic internal holder containing a small glass fuse was cracked and so the fuse was loose.
You don’t have to remove the seat. Remove the down side cover, 2 screws and the up side cover @ screws. With covers removed you just lift them out. At least on the 420 model.
my lift stopped and won’t move. it beeps twice and shows me the number4. each time i reset it , it does the same even with the remotes

Found this on internet.
Fault Code 4. Chair-arm rocker switch or key switch is off. Check power key is in correctly and on/off switch is in the ‘on’ position.
Hi ive bought a stannah 600 used, drove it of the rail using emegency mode all ok, when i fitted in my dads house it want work comes up with code 8 then 9, the only thing different is that i broke one of the copper pickups putting it back on the rail from the top, is that the issue , do they need to make contact to work, batteries where fully charged
my stannah 400 starts after and will go up and down as normal
but if left for 20 mins it will not move .the motor click in but it will not move .and i try 2or3 times and it moves as normal.

Hi, my parents have the 260 model, had it since 2007, the problem is, it stops just about every 1 or 2 stair steps, your average stair steps, going up, but then sometimes goes down in one go…appreciate the help very much
Check the main batteries.
Hello. I have a Stannah 420 that I need to remove just the chair to clear getting some appliances delivered. Can you explain how I might do that? Thanks…Pat
I have a Stannah 420 does not move even with new batteries. took covers off to look at PCM and found when I activate joystick red led 1 comes on stead then I let go and stays on Then when I activate joystick again, red led 5 comes on steady also and stays on with led 1 until I reset with the master switch. Anyone know what this means? unit is like 10 yrs old and I don’t want to start spending a lot of money on it
I recently re-installed a Stannah 420 and it works perfectly except the remotes do not work. Both flash when the buttons are pushed. I read somewhere to jump across two pins and switch the lift back on and press each remote separately for about 6+ seconds.
I see two pins sticking up in the middle of the circuit board. Are these the pins I am looking for and is this the correct procedure to reset the remotes?
Thanks,
Hello can someone please help ? We had a stannah 400 and now we have the 420 but the chair seems to be sat on a forward angle slightly which I never noticed on the 400. Everything is tight and runs up and down track perfectly. Is this a new design ?

Stannah 260 battery fully charged (I think) – – – – press switch to go up and it stops on first step – – only way to move again is to switch power off and then on again – then press upwards button once again and it will go up for another half a step – – this process has to be repeated about twenty times to get to the top landing – – Please does anybody have any idea why it should do this – – Many thanks in advance for any suggestions ?
I have stannah 600 and recently replaced batteries. Chair works fine with no fault codes showing but when chair stops in either direction a short two tone beep is heard. This occurs if chair is stopped mid travel positions or top or bottom of rail. Chair did not make this beep sound prior to replacing batteries.
My Stannah 300 has an error code on the main board. Can you tell me what the six led diodes 1,2,3,4,5,6. indicate and what the 4 leds on the remote board mean? Led 6 appears to be a green power indictor. 5 Led turns red when you call for the chairlift to move up or down. Please tell me where I can get/buy any Manuals, ( Parts,Service, Owners. Etc.) Called for a service tech but to date no one has responded. Please respond to E-mail with Stannah in Title.

Hi Kent Could you call again tomorrow please, if you calling from outside uk you might need to dial +00448005677033
The spring the controls the rotation of the seat is broken and now missing on my Stannah stairlift.
You might need an engineer out, some models require to remove the seat off the carriage .
hi moms chair lift failed, carer fiddled with it somewhere at the rear and got it working, however the right arm will not lower and is stuck in upright position since that time. any ideas.
