Acorn 180 curved stairlift repair

Carriage Operation
The carriage comprises a power bogie (PB) and a levelling bogie (LB) mounted on a common frame (F). The carriage is held square on the rail by side rollers (S) on both power and levelling bogies. The downward weight of the power bogie is taken on the support wheel (SW) running on the bottom of rail (R). The support wheel may bear against underside of the rail when negotiating vertical bends. The downward weight of the levelling bogie is taken on the top roller (TR) running on the rail (R). The drive motor (DM) rotates a pinion (P) on a rack to drive the carriage along the rail. The levelling motor (LM) adjusts the frame to maintain the seat upright when moving over vertical bends. An over-speed governor (OSG) will activate and stop the carriage in the case of an uncontrolled descent.
Vertical bends connect horizontal and sloping rails (R). When the carriage moves over vertical bends the levelling motor (L) adjusts the frame to maintain the seat in an upright position. All side rollers (S) on both bogies are mechanically adjusted to remain horizontal with the rail. An anti-tilt mechanism (A) prevents the carriage from tipping excessively in the event of a levelling failure.
Horizontal bends connect horizontal rails (R) at 90Λ to each other. When the carriage moves around horizontal bends the power bogie (PB) and levelling bogie (LB) pivot in the frame as the carriage moves around the bend.
When the carriage moves around helical bends, both levelling and pivoting operations occur at the same time. Carriage speed is decreased when traversing vertical bends, inside horizontal bends and helical bends. The speed sequence is programmed during installation. If battery power is lost the datum setting must be re-programmed. The carriage has a βsoftβ start and stop feature
Testing & Setting
OVERRIDE INSTRUCTION. If the number 6 shows:
1 Switch off lift at on/off switch. 2 Put call in using rocker switch in required direction. 3 Switch on lift with on/off switch whilst holding the call in on the rocker switch. 4 The lift will now drive.
Programming Modes
This procedure describes how to completely program the Stairlift. If the batteries are disconnected at any time the program will be retained, except for the Datum Position and Top Terminal limit, which then must be re-programmed in. The lift orientation is set Left Hand or Right Hand for the program. Factory set. A datum position is set at the top of the rail as the lift leaves the top charge point. The top charge point position is set (Terminal Limit). Carriage speeds are programmed in as the lift moves down the rail. The bottom charge point position is set (Terminal Limit). Programming is then completed for both up and down travel. Three carriage speeds are possible: CREEP SPEED (slow) is the default setting and is used just before stopping. BEND SPEED when moving around vertical, inside horizontal bends and helical bends. It is also used as an intermediate speed. FULL SPEED along straight rail sections.

Why is my acorn/brooks curved stairlift is not level?
NOTE: Leveling the seat of Acorn 180 or Bison 80
The pentionemeter levels the stairlift and it should come level from the factory. However, there may be a time that you need to adjust it. Notice the small blue box at the bottom of the circuit on the picture below. Now notice the tiny copper screw on the bottom left of the blue box. This screw will adjust the level. You must have the chair in program mode and moving in order to notice the level of the machine. Adjust it slightly as the machine moves and stop when the carriage is level according to a leveling tool. Note: if the chair is tilting heavily at random times, you may have an encoder problem and not a pentionemeter problem.

Error code F1: this fault is a relay fault in the main PCB caused by hot switch relay signals switch.
You can reset the fault by taking the front panel screws and get access to the main board , by taping the relay b a screw driver as it showing in the picture, you will release the relay from being jammed, this method is only an emergency to get your stairlift back in working order, we strongly advice to get in contact with your local stairlift company and get it sorted asap.

- If you Remove the Power Bogie covers to get access the over speed governor OSG.
Check that the Regulator and Trigger arm are in the position shown below.
IF THE OSG DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THE IMAGE BELOW DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE THE CARRIAGE.

If the stairlift is making a grinding noise on straight run or around the bend ( Curve ) , it is a cause for concern andΒ could be indicative of worn rollers. This should managed as soon as possible . Another indication of worn rollers is if your stailift is suddenly running much slower.

Mine needed oiling. It had got a bit stiff and the arm not bobbing to and fro. You can also adjust the spring setting. There are five positions by default itβs set in the middle hole.
Curve 180 just had new os unit but now will not move just keeps just trying to level its self. And then getting stuck. Any ideas to help?

))acorn 180 chairlift showing F9 code. Lift will operate with no problems if no one is riding. When someone sits in chair( going up)lift will move about 4 to 5 feet and stop. Lift works great going downβ¦problem is coming up. Occasionally the lift will go up with someone aboard. Sorta hit and miss
Itβs Battries problem, you need to keep the lift on the charger point for 60 minutes then try again . If you already did that, you need to replace the main batteries.

My stairlift is showing a j5 error after installation and I canβt get into programming mode. Is there a way I can fix this myself? Holding the switches on the foot plate did no good

Acorn Curve 180 problem. When programming switch is set to on, it shows the symbol “searching for datum.” Chair does not move either direction, but does move manually. Circuit board has been changed, but made no difference. Sometimes when programming switch is set to on it shows fault code”O”, meaning OSG problem. OSG will reset and chair still moves manually so brake is not engaged. But the next time program switch is set to program it sometimes will show the “O” fault.
If itβs the code (0) itβs the OSG , make sure itβs rest and test the wires going into the board of both ends !
Hi I got the new acorn T595 PCB I’ve programmed it no problems I went up and down on it and its all fine but when my dad went to use it last night it stops just before the top charge point it looks like one contact is on but the other one i’snt any reasons this happens I can move the charge point down to the seat just wondered why it’s stopping just before top charge point and can’t move it up anymore on to it
Try to reprogram it again ! Sounds like you missed something. Make sure set datum at the top charging point .

You have installation error. You check the dip switches for choosing the side of installation. Left or right .

I have an Acorn 180. Itβs two years old and the remotes no longer operate the stairlift. The lift works fine with the arm rest controls. I replaced the batteries with no luck. How do I reprogram the remotes?
Stop the lift on charge point. Turn the seat, display will show E6.
Now press the toggle toward DOWN and at the Same time press and hold any button on the remote control for 5 seconds.

E code is installation error! Double check that you have chosen which hand Side stairlift fitting, if you using the dip switch pcb double check the switches. If using the smart pcb always press toward the up on toggle witch

Hi Sam I was given a working 180 and it will not fit back on the rail. It looks like the two rollers on the right side are out too far intern not leaving enough room to fit the rail. The oSG was also tripped. That is reset. Any clues?? Thanks so much

Hi we have an A1 code and beeping to suggest the unit requires charging but it is already in its charge point at the bottom of the stairs so we canβt work out why itβs not changing to the C1 code. All advice welcome. Thank you
Make sure the charging adopter ( power supply) is turned on .
Also make sure there is 33/32 volts on charging point .
How do you Reset over speed governor on Acorn 180 ?
You will need to hand wind the lift toward the up direction. Make sure you winding it UP not down .
Can a 180 Lift be changed in the field from Left Hand Unit to Right Hand Unit? If parts change are required are part available near Madison, Wisconsin, USA?
You canβt reverse the acorn 180 from left to right. Itβs cheaper to buy a complete unit.

‘How do I get rid of the F8 error on an Acorn 180 Stairlift? The lift went down the stair and came back up and we stopped it before the charging station so we could unload the person then the F8 error appeared. We hand cranked it to the charging postion but don’t know how to level the chair.

I got stuck in the last step of re-programming an acorn 180 when I returned the chair to the bottom charging point after hitting the final limit and got into the P3 stage sucessfully. It keeps displaying C1/C4 (meaning charging properly) but just couldn’t move up to the top charging point to finish the re-programming.
By the way, I performed the re-programming steps on a make shift transfer piece of about one meter long with the stairlift chair mounted horizontally. Not sure the problem was caused by the fact that the rail is too short to allow proper programming of the stairlift.
Hi Sam, how do you exit program mode after reaching the bottom charging point on an Acorn 180 T565 board?
No as soon as you set the limit at the bottom, move the lift slightly up on bottom charger the lift will save the program and set to go !

Hello, in my area there is no service, on a 2 years old acorn 180 i have problem, first i desintall it, and the reinstall it, it indicate a f6, so i read somewhere to move out of the charge area and the bring it back to the charge, i did move the with the emergency control with a very strong drill so the carriage and it move a bit fast π , so now i have a f7 problem, how di i fix this

Hi, my mums Brooks 180 curve stairlift regularly displays an E5 code and will not move up or down so I have to manually move it to the charging points which takes forever. The remote control bleeps but it still doesnt move. Often it is out of use for half a day. Sometimes when I move the foot plate up slightly does it change the code and I am able to move it but this is only occasionally.
E5 on acorn 180 curved – the carriage upside safe edge switch is activated. You need to check the upside safe edge.

Hi, Stupid question. How do you reduce the volume of the beeps that you get in normal operation. An engineer showed me once but I didn’t need to do it until we had an upgrade to the software, and I can’t remember what he said.

Drive the Lift of the charger, Turn ( swivel) the seat and use the remote control. UP β¬οΈ or Down β¬οΈ To increase or decrease the volume.

I have a brooks/Acorn 180 with V565 board – i.e. no toggle switches – how do you put the thing into programme mode? I need to replace the batteries but don’t know how to reprogramme the datum & top parking settings. Any ideas?
You donβt need to reprogram the lift if you park the lift on charge point and just change batteries one at the time . Try not discount both batteries at once .

The Acorn Curve 180 is showing code F8. I think it means the Final Limit switch has been triggered. Can I reset? Also, the plunger on the OSG has been triggered, but won’t reset using the reset lever.

Sam, I have an Acorn 180 that was given to me. The OSG was tripped and I reset it. The problem now is it will not fit on the rail. The two Side Rollers that are on the front side of the carriage are out too much. Is there some way to back them off to open the space?
Hi Garry! Itβs a bit tricky putin the lift on the the track ! You need to be patient and keep an eye on the OSG.
Sam-U1, I seem to have all ok now but the programming is off for sure T565. I am ok with the programming But now I have this weird error code that came up ” Ed” ? OMG im going to go nuts with this one..

Hi I got the t565 Acorn chairlift , I’m having a F9 code up not all the time but it does seem to be getting worse the chair stops gives a F9 code then I can press up twice and it ll go up again but maybe stop again few feet on , any help would be great.

1) My lift will not level. Having many spare parts, I replaced the board, the level motor and microcontroller, still nothing. Any suggestions?
2) Because of my issue, I have an older 24V carriage. Can I use that if I swap out the PCB and Li Ion batteries? My track is set up with the 33v charger already.
My friends acorn curve 180 is giving a j5 error code. Pressing the footplate switches will not put it in programming mode. Am I missing something is there a way for me to fix this myself?
Hi Casey, i have the same problem you had with J5 fault and can’t get it in to programming mode. Have been given all the bumf on how to set up. Followed step by step ie move off charge point and press the footplate switches etc but will not go in. Had plenty of goes but to no avail and as soon as i try to move back onto charging point just goes back to J5.

Experiencing a f9 error on my acorn 180 stairlift. It stops every one to two feet. Iβve cleaned the tracks and tried a hard reset. Acorn has no local technicians and Iβm still waiting for a estimated date. Are there any other suggested troubleshooting activities. The lift is approximately 3 years old.

My mum has the Acorn 180 stairlift, it was installed at the end of 2017, It blow many boards whilst it was under warranty, but now has the latest board (the one with no toggle switches or relays), everything has been fine for the past 3 years but now the lift has developed a strange fault where it will charge on the upstairs charging point (C1 to charge and then it goes C4 after 7 minutes to show its now charged) but when the lift comes downstairs and is parked on the downstairs charging point, it’s now saying “C4” all the time with the occasional “C1” now and again, so the problem is even though the lift is parked on the downstairs charging point and the alarm is not sounding, it is not charging after being used and this is now causing the lift to shut down before it reaches the bend and goes round the corner to the upstairs charging point where it is happy, Is there any micro switch in the lift carriage that switches on the C1 charging mode for the downstairs charging point ? as it seems like an intermittent fault because now and again it will show “C1” downstairs but very rarely as most of the time it just says “C4” when it should be “C1” and then “C4” when charged… Please help !
Hi joe , Iβm not 100% sure what could be as few tests had to be done!! But .. I would start with batteries. The batteries are fitted with cut out pcb. Test the batteries if you can .

Me and my mum really appreciate this,
I have now tested both batteries with the multimeter and they are both showing as 14.3 volts so I think they might be OK ? (they are now 3 years old and are the newer type grey lithium iron batteries.
I know that the lift is charging perfectly on the upstairs charging point but when the lift travels downstairs and is on the charging point downstairs it refuses to engage the “C1” charging mode to recharge the batteries and just displays “C4” regardless of whether the batteries are in a drained state.
Both charging points look exactly the same and the spring loaded brushes are making good contact with the two brass plates on both the charging points when the lift is parked on them, So either there are some micro switches inside the lift carriage which are not working or stuck ? or there might be a problem with the battery charger (I think that the battery charger has 4 low voltage wires coming out of it, 2 for the upstairs charging point and 2 for the downstairs charging point, maybe the battery charger has gone bad and the voltage for the downstairs charging point is too low or not right, as the lift will sometimes engage “C1” and charge downstairs but very rarely now.
The main problem is if the lift travels from upstairs to downstairs and does not recharge its batteries downstairs, when my mum uses it to go back upstairs the lift then shuts down about 3/4 of the way up with my mum stick on it ! and panicking !! and I have to use a cordless power ratchet with an 8mm drive socket in order to turn the lift’s main drive motor anti-clock wise in order to get my mum back downstairs where the lift then some how manages to come back to life once its on the downstairs charging point and recharge !
There has to be a way to sort this out, My mum had just turned 78 and is very scared of Covid and we are very reluctant to call out an engineer to sort out the problem.
If you can think of anything else or you have any ideas what we can try next, please post back here and me and my mum will be VERY grateful as my mum now feels lost without her lift working properly.

I think I have worked out what the problem is with the “C1” charging mode only engaging upstairs but not downstairs… When you said that it could be the batteries you are right in one sense and you did say that the batteries have their own PCB ? right ?…
So, although both batteries 14.3v when I tested them, I think that the problem lies with the battery on the left side of the carriage not picking up a decent charge, whilst the battery on the right is full and strong…
So the way I see it is this Acorn/Brookes 180 stairlift has 2 batteries inside its carriage, they are both 14.3 volts and look to be exactly the same, so one must be to bring the lift down and one must be to bring the lift up ?, when the lift is underload and the speed increases when the lift is going up or down both batteries are engaged to put out maximum voltage and amperage to get the faster speed, If for some reason one of the batteries is bad or very weak, or the current is exceeded, the lift main PCB then senses this and shuts down the lift until it is reset by one of the charging points which brings it back to life again from a shutdown, so the explanation is the battery that charges from the upstairs charging point and brings the lift down is OK and allowing the lift to engage the “C1” charging mode when the lift is parked on the upstairs charging point, but the battery responsible for brining the lift upstairs is bad and is not allowing the lift to engage the “C1” charging mode when the lift is parked on the downstairs charging point.
So the logical solution is to buy another battery exactly the same and swap the bad battery for a new one which is good and see what happens next !
Hopefully It will start saying “C1” downstairs again soon if that is the problem !

The batteries are both connected in series ! Not obvious series connection! But they are in the pcb . The stairlift motors voltage is 24v . Both batteries are running the lift up and down .
The only way for to test the batteries is by parking the lift on top charger for 30 minutes or more then call it down, and immediately set on it and drive it up . If the same throw the same fault again ! Itβs the batteries.
Make sure you get 32/33 bolts on the both charging points.

Thanks for the info and the tip, I’ll do what you said and see what happens. I did buy another new battery (I could only find one new one for sale on eBay UK) so I will also try that as well just incase it is the battery PCB on one of the batteries that’s gone bad.
I have another problem, Last night it got stuck halfway up whilst I was testing it, I had to remove the seat in order to get my cordless drill onto the motor drive shaft to wind the lift back down to the downstairs charging point, now that I put the seat back as it was and tightened the little plastic grub screw that keeps the seat locked into the main carriage, now the left arm buttons will not work ! but the lift does work fine in both directions if I use one of the remotes to go up or down, What could be causing only one arm switch to only be working ? (the up switch) I have made sure both arms are right done engaging their micro switches, and I can’t see any other micro switches underneath the seat that could not be switched on, I have checked both the connectors at the back of the seat and both the larger multiplug and the smaller one are connected OK so this is really puzzling why the lift/seat will now only move in one direction if using the arm switches but moves in both directions if using the remote control ?
Any help with this second problem would be greatly appreciated.

Just an update,
Well I ordered another battery off eBay but sadly the order was cancelled by the seller because no courier would accept the battery unless it was inside an product, so I was back at square one…
It was last night when I decided to fiddle with the wires behind the seat of my mum’s Brookes 180 stairlift only to find a couple of broken wires from one of the harnesses !, I managed to splice these 2 wires back together and solder them, and shrink wrap them with that shrink wrap you put a cigarette lighter on, after this BOTH arm switches now work perfectly to bring the lift up and down !
I also found a way to engage “C1” manually so the lift it can recharge its batteries on the downstairs charging point… What I did was to LIFT THE SEAT UP THEN TURN THE KEY TO THE “OFF” POSITION, WAIT FOR 5 SECONDS, THEN TURN THE KEY BACK TO THE “ON” POSITION and hey Presto “C1” charging mode now engages to recharge the batteries so I think the batteries are fine.
So it seems that refreshing the lift by turning it off and on by the key switch causes THE “C1” charging mode to activate and recharge the batteries, otherwise it just stays on “C4” no matter what you do !
Hope this helps anyone who has this problem, It is a good workaround until I can figure out what is causing “C1” not to activate after the lift has been used and is on the downstairs charging point as it works fine when the lift is on the upstairs charging point which is crazy as they are supposed to be the same but obviously the lift does not think so !

Has anyone experienced an error code F9 appearing during the programming stage of taking the lift down and then up again?
This seems to also stop the lift at the same points after the programming has been saved and the only way to overcome the problem is to release the had-switch or remote and press it again twice.
I can’t figure out what F9 means and it stops and different points on the length of the track (ave 6 times) during each programming attempt.
F9 is the OSG pulse not sending signal to the main pcb . The osg not pulse not rotating at the point . Take the cover off and look for the osg . The video in this post shows the rotating of the osg

Yesterday I received 2 brand new T565 batteries and manage to change the batteries on my mum’s Acorn/Brooks 180 curved stairlift, I changed 1 battery at a time so not to loose the programming of the lift – the switch over from the 2 old batteries to the 2 new ones was a success as the programming was not lost and the lift went up and down 6 times on a single charge !
Problem is now the lift does not seem to be charging on the upstairs or the downstairs charging points, it just says “C4” all the time since I replaced the batteries and even turning the lift off from the key switch now does not engage “C1″ for it to recharge the batteries, So I am unsure what is going on ? or whether the lift PCB thinks the batteries still has plenty of charge in them and they don’t need to recharge at the moment ??
I’m not sure if I did anything wrong, as I did photograph both battery connections first before I removed anything and I connected the new batteries EXACTLY the same as the old ones were connected to the PCB board as follows;-
When looking at the lift from the front, On the left hand side, the battery is connected to the left side PCB board with the black ” – ” wire going to the top spade connector and the red ” + ” going to the bottom spade connector.
When looking at the lift from the front, On the right hand side, the battery is connected to the right side PCB board with the red ” + ” wire going to the top spade connector and the black ” – ” wire going to the bottom spade connector.
I read somewhere online that the lift is designed in such a way that it will not recharge the batteries if they are completely flat and that they should be recharged first before installing them in the lift with a battery charger.
I did test them both before I installed them with a battery voltage meter and they both showed as fully charged and 14.8v and they were both manufactured in 1st month of 2022 so they are only a few weeks old and they must have been fully charged when they came out of the box as the lift also went up and down 6 times in total on the SAME charge !
I’m not sure what is going to happen now ?, will the lift eventually recharge these new batteries when they drain too far or will it continue to neglect charging the batteries until they die and the lift conks out half way on the stairs with my mum sitting in it !
Also I would like to know, would the lift ever switch over from “C4” to “C1” whilst its parked on the charging point if it is left standing unused overnight and the charge in the batteries drop below a certain level as the tiny green led in the back switch and the flashing red digital to take some power when left for so many hours so I am wondering would the lift auto charge the batteries ??

If you can ! Test one or both batteries voltage, if itβs below 14.2 and showing c4 you have a problem with main pcb . Saying that I had a pcb showing c4 but it was charging while on c4 .

I am pleased to report that on the 12th go (6 up and 6 down) the lift has now engaged the “C1” charging mode to finally recharge the batteries !!! – yay !
On my mum’s old batteries it would normally do a “C1” for about 6 minutes to recharge the batteries every time the lift has been used up or down and charge on whichever charging point its parked on (whether upstairs or downstairs), Now with this new replacement batteries which were Β£230.00 plus Β£10 delivery (I will put the link at the very end where anyone can by these batteries incase anyone needs them) my mums lift can go 6 times up and 6 times down on a 13 step flight of stairs before it needs to recharge its batteries so I recon that the PCB board inside these new batteries has been programmed differently or maybe these batteries are using more newer and efficient cells ?
Either way, My mum is now very pleased and now has confidence restored in her lift ! to be able to come and join us downstairs more often now ! π

My 180 stairlift will not operate with the controls on the arm rests. Only operates with the remotes. Have to wait till August for service. I check the main cable connector on the back of the unit, is ok. Any help appreciated. Unit is 9 months old.
Acorn 180 making knocking noise ascending and descending when seat occupied. No noise when seat empty. Any ideas?

My mum’s stairlift has been great all this time since we followed your advice and replaced the batteries back in February 2022…
That was until yesterday when it’s now developed a new fault where when going up or down the lift travels for about 2 feet and then stops abruptly, then after about 10 seconds the lift then will work again, travel another 2 feet and do exactly the same thing again, I did this about 5 times before my mum was able to get upstairs and it did this when she came down stairs in the lift this lunchtime…
I have checked the batteries and they are both putting out 14.8 volts, I read somewhere that the fault could be to do with the overspeed governor not sending the right signal to the main PCB computer…
Not sure about this, but it seems like maybe the motor is pulling too much amps when running for approx 8 seconds and then the computer is shutting it down abruptly !
We noticed when the lift reaches the bend and has to slow down and then pic up again everything is okay after this, Maybe because the motor is using less current ?…
If I can not fix this at the moment, is there a setting on the Acorn 180 that will allow the lift to run slower ?? so that the motor uses less current.
Any help or suggestions what to try would be greatly appreciated as my mum is now very scared of being stranded on the lift if I’m no home to help her.

Just an update to let you know that I have now fixed my mum’s Acorn 180 stairlift, The problem was the overspeed governor needed to be reset, now all is OK ! and the lift is no longer stopping abruptly every 1-2 feet.
Hope this helps people who are having the same problem with their lift traveling a little way and stopping abruptly !

Hi Sam i have J5 fault and can’t get it in to programming mode. Have been given all the bumf on how to set up. Followed step by step ie move off charge point and press the footplate switches etc but will not go in. Had plenty of goes but to no avail and as soon as i try to move back onto charging point just goes back to J5. I wind it back onto charge point and it goes back to flashing C4.

Hi my acorn 180 curve will go down but will not go up shows C1 and C4 on charge point on doing a reset at top when first switch on shows 3 horozontal bars for 1 sec then shows C4 any clues would be very helpful

I am having problems re-programming our Acorn 180 Curved lift T565
Shows flashing βC4β when on charge point. Manually move off to program and press the required footplate etc but will not go into program mode just stays on βE1β.
Try to move back to charge point via remote or toggle switches and just beeps and displays βJ5β. According to Fault code this is Program not stored or corrupted. I really would like any help with this if any one has had this problem and knows how to fix.
